Sad

Some of you may have been surprised when you read Nathan Solis' newspaper article yesterday to learn that Patriot died from ingesting rat poision, or rodenticide. Let me explain for those who weren't aware of this...

The intruder eagle, nicknamed "Newbie", came in and disrupted Patriot & Liberty & their nesting territory in March of 2013. Newbie, had been actively chasing Patriot out of his nesting territory for a few months. Patriot attempted to return to his territory and his mate, Liberty, several times, but only to be run off again by the larger, healthier Newbie. Liberty did her best to incubate the eggs without her mate, but soon after each of the eaglets hatched, they were both killed and eaten by Newbie. A very unusual event in itself!
Patriot eventually fell to his death during an aerial battle with Newbie on May 10, 2013. Several witnesses watched the aerial battle between Patriot and the other adult eagle above Park Marina Drive, across the street from the Shell Station. They reported that after chasing each other and going at each other in the sky for over 15 minutes, one of the eagles "fell out of the sky". That eagle turned out to be Patriot. The necropsy revealed that the rat poison(rodenticide) acted as an anti-coagulant and caused Patriot to "bleed out" in mid-air. He was dead before he hit the ground

We did not know at that time that Patriot had even ingested rodenticide, that was discovered during the necropsy that was done by Fish & Wildlife down in Sacramento.

How and where Patriot ingested the rat poison, we don't know?

We do know that the EPA has made great efforts to ban Rodenticide in our Country, but some people might still have some in their garage or shed that they still use? Someone on our fb page also mentioned that the Mexican Cartel, who are actively growing marijuana in our beautiful surrounding mountains & forests, use rodenticide regularly to keep rodents out of their grows. Then, they leave the poison behind when they move to another area, poisoning the ecosystem and all of the wildlife along with it

Here is an article about the devastation this poison causes in our environment...

Two chicks confirmed today by ground observers.  A request to install the camera on the new nest was denied by the Golf club. Sad
