This osprey nest is located at the Connecticut Audubon Coastal Center in Milford, CT.

We have been watching and recording the activities of the nest since the 2007 season;  it has given us many years of enjoyment and fond memories. We have affectionately dubbed the pair with the names of Kidd and Lola.  They usually return every year about the 3rd week of March.

You can read all about the history that we have recorded through the years by visiting our previous forum: (no longer available)

Here is a link to the CT Audubon main osprey page for the history of the nest and the years previous to 2007.
http://www.ctaudubon.org/action/osprey.htm

A couple of us that are photography amateurs are fortunate to live close enough to the nest so that we can give ‘on site’ verbal and photographic reports.
Here is the link to the on site photo thread:

Here is hoping we have many more years with this exceptionally beautiful osprey pair.

Welcome to all who visit......I hope you grow to love them as much as we do.  Smiley

2011 Season
(Coverage of activity starts below)

Kidd returned on March 24
Lola returned on March 28 (possibly the 27th but positively ID'd on the 28th)

NOTE: This season will be very difficult to say for sure regarding the eggs as they have the nest built up with sticks.
We are certain of Egg #1.

1st egg ....... April 9 ..... hatched May 19
2nd egg ...... not sure ..  hatched May 22 (a guess as cam was down -- DEP using this date)
3rd egg ....... not sure.... hatched May 25

1st fledge .....July 14 .... at least first sighting on site by Thomas and Carol (DEP)
Oldest was 8 weeks old that day
2nd and 3rd....by July 17 ..... cam was down but I had email from photographer that was there on 17th and saw all three flying

Last sighting before migration
Lola               August 18, 2011
Kidd               August 23 or 24?  hurricane Irene took the cam down so we don't
                     know when he actually left.

2012 Season
(Coverage of activity starts on page 74)
http://www.window-on-wildlife.com/index.php?topic=17.msg34440#msg34440

Return March 19th ......both seen and reported by Connecticut Audubon

1st egg  ......  April 11 .....   May 21
2nd egg  .....  April 13 .....   May 23
3rd egg  ......  April 16  .....  May 26
4th egg  ......  April 19

1st fledge       July 16
2nd fledge      July 17
3rd fledge       by July 22

Last sightings before migration

Lola                   August 20th
1 Chick               Sept 2nd
Remaining chick  Sept 9th.....in with large fish 8:35 AM....we did not see her after that
(We had not seen three chicks on nest in a long time so not sure about #3)
Kidd                   Sept 5th, 7:45 AM in with fish waiting for chick.   Chick did not come in so he left.

2013 Season
Coverage of activity starts on page 148
http://www.window-on-wildlife.com/index.php?topic=17.msg58520#msg58520

Kidd returned on March 22nd (while the crew was working on the cam!)
Lola returned  on March 29th

1st egg      April  8, 2013  .....    ?
2ndegg      April 11, 2013  ....    May 22, 2013.....We have opted to call this chick "DJ".
3rd egg      April 14, 2013 .....    ?
Question marks on Eggs 1 and 3 as they were not viable.  Based on the number of days for hatching, it
is likely that chick is 2nd egg.

DJ fledged on July 20, 2013

Sadly, our beautiful Lola did not return this year or if she did, something happened to her. Personally, I do not believe she would
give up her nest that easily.  I think I saw her on 3/29 but not again after that.  brokenheart crying
We will miss you, special Lola, and you will always remain in our hearts. love

Kidd has accepted a new mate

1st  egg .......April 25
2nd egg ...... April 28

Ospreys spotted in Connecticut today!

Per "CTAudubon" Twitter:

"Already a couple reports of Osprey and Osprey pairs today, great! We cannot wait for our pair to return to the nest at Milford Point."

Hi everyone! ......I am sooooo excited.  I went over to Milford at lunch break and got such wonderful news!
Though she hasn't seen an osprey at our location as yet, Louise and Carol say they have gotten many
reports of osprey returning early all over the state.
Louise said she will email me as soon as she sees on of "ours".  Hopefully the return will be when she is there!   bigsmile

Anyway......here is the good news.
When they went to check the platform while getting the cam ready for the season, they discovered it had completely
caved in.  A lot of rotten wood etc. - The volunteer guys were out there for 4 hours the other day kind of rebuilding
the platform so that it is very solid right now.
They are building another one just in case anything happens to this one through the season.  If this one holds up,
they will put the 'new' one up in the fall after Kidd and Lola leave.

The best news is our new view!   Scoll down to see......I took a picture of the TV screen for you all.
We're ready!!  nod2 (sadly cam won't be turned on till one of ours appears. Think they are struggling financially and holding off as long as they can)

This will be our new view!
Looks funny without any sticks, doesn't it?  lollol ....good news is we will have fun watching them build it up.  bigsmile

Afraid it might be a problem if one of them perches on the post in lower right......might block the view. rolleyes2
That's OK.....I'll take it over what we have had the past couple years!  nod2

Sherri, you know that post...perfect perch...I'm sure Lola & Kidd won't pass it up...hopefully they won't have much time to use it....they're going to have their talons full getting the nest together  mhihi  I hope they get cam up so we can watch the construction.  Better, if the cam was up when they arrive...what a shock for Lola & Kidd.

Oh Sherri!!!! .. Thanks so much for the incredible news and the incredible views!!! I agree with Jazzel, Kidd is going to be in for quite a shock when he arrives soon.  laughinghard Poor Oscar lost his winter digs.

I hope they decide to turn it on soon. I would love to see Kidd arrive. I'm getting ready to do a donation and I'll make sure to note that I hope they turn on the cam soon. They have a lofty goal...
From the website:
Connecticut Audubon Society’s
Annual Appeal is currently underway!
Our goal is to raise $460,000
by April 30, 2011.

Thanks for posting about the fund raising, Lori. .... and you're welcome.  bigsmile
Yes.....good idea to mention that you are a cam watcher if anyone sending a donation.
I'm sure the cam will go on as soon as one arrives......we will see the nest building for sure.
(well, that is providing they don't have any internet issues!  rolleyes2
The TV monitor was working well yesterday)
......and he sure will be in for a shock!  lollol

Sherri, thanks for going to Audubon, and for the great photos bigsmile  Our new view looks terrific! nod2  Glad to know they will turn on the cam as soon as one of our pair arrives.  Wish they could turn it on in advance of their arrival but I understand about the need to keep tabs on spending.  I think a donation is in order Smiley  Agree that Kidd has a lot of work ahead of him, just to get their home ready! lollol  About that post they might use as a perch...I just hope they don't use it as a 'powder room'! innocent Grin
