WBEN 930 AM Radio reported that one of the Statler chicks had a mishap .... but is expected to recover .....

The SPCA is caring for an injured Peregrine Falcon. The bird was found last Thursday near the corner of Pearl and Swan in Buffalo.

This is a fledgling from the Statler Towers where these birds of prey have had a nest for years.

The bird's name is Franklin.  He was banded shortly after he was born this past Spring.  "He has a fractured shoulder said Barbara Haney, the SPCA's Director of Wildlife.  Years ago it was thought that birds with this type of injury would never fly again.  But Veterinary Technician Beverly Jones said a research study on birds of prey determined that 98% of these birds were releasable after care that includes a wing wrap and rest.

The bird is not eating on its own. That's not unusual said Jones. "these are highly stressed birds".  While reporters were at the SPCA, Jones force-fed Franklin a mouse.

Franklin is expected to be at the SPCA Serving Erie County for about a month.  At that time it will be transferred and the DEC will decide where it will be released.

Peregrine falcons are considered endangered species.  "This is a very special bird said Haney.  They are elite flyers.  They can reach speeds of 200 mph. They are the fastest animals on earth.

This is one of 3000 animals being cared for by the SPCA this year.

An interesting point that I caught on FB ..... it looks like there is activity in the nest box in the Niagara Gorge near Niagara Falls.... maybe a second attempt after failure of the first clutch earlier in the year.

I still haven't found another site to replace Photobucket for posting pics. When I do, there will be pics coming  bigsmile
