Title: Delta 2 BC Observations, ScreenShots & Video
Post by: JudyB on November 09, 2010, 09:06:17 PM
This is a new nest for Hancock Wildlife - I'll try to add a bit of history soon.  They raised two chicks in 2010. :)

Link to Camera (http://www.hancockwildlife.org/index.php?topic=Delta2#new-camera) (this is a streaming camera with sound; unfortunately the night vision bulb burned out before the 2013 nesting season, but we hope to have it - and a second cam - for 2014)

The cam is also available on UStream
 - with chat - http://www.ustream.tv/hwfdeltaeagles (http://www.ustream.tv/hwfdeltaeagles)
 - no chat and resizable in some browsers - http://www.ustream.tv/hwfdeltaeagles/pop-out (http://www.ustream.tv/hwfdeltaeagles/pop-out)

2011 Nesting Season
  • eggs laid:  March 3, maybe around 3:35 am, seen at 3:36 pm; March 6, 11:10 am
  • eggs hatch:  April 11, 1:13 pm (39 days); April 12, 10:14 am (37 days)
  • named by local school classes:  Oreo and Jet
  • oops:  Oreo fell or was blown from the nest June 19 (age 69 days) and was rescued and taken to O.W.L.
  • fledge: Jet - July 16 (95 days); Oreo - July 21 from O.W.L.

2012 Nesting Season
  • eggs laid:  around March 3; March 6, 5:17 pm
  • eggs hatch:  April 11, seen 6:15 am (39 days); April 11, 11:29 am (36 days)
  • named in honor of HWF tech person Richard Pitt:  Goldwing and Linux
  • sad news:  Goldwing died during the night of May 31-June 1, perhaps as a result of something that was stuck in her crop
  • fledge: July 3, 3:31 pm (83 days)

2013 Nesting Season
  • eggs laid:  March 7, afternoon; March 10, 3:34 pm
  • eggs hatch:  April 16, 12:44 pm (40 days if #1, 37 days if #2); other egg did not hatch
  • named
  • fledge:

Here’s the story:  One of the eagles was monitoring the rush-hour traffic.  Suddenly, he flew off to ticket a speeder. ;) You can see him in the upper left hand corner of the video.

You can watch this cam at night, too.

Great video of the visitors, beans!

One of the adults spent the night on the nest - here's a picture of her sleeping with her head tucked in around 3 am nest time (6 am my time in Maine)

I don't know the pair well enough to know if she's close to egg-laying, or if she just sometimes spends the night on the nest.  She was there when I looked in at 6:15 am pacific time yesterday, though I didn't think to look earlier.  The female at Lafarge has been sleeping standing in the nest on and off for a week or two, so it apparently is something some eagles do - perhaps more so when there are less suitable trees for perching in the area.

(Added - this is actually a picture by nightowl or gemini taken an hour earlier - not sure where my pic went, but it was fairly similar.)

The eagle was away from 2:15 to 4:26 PM (local time). I think that may have been Mom the whole time on the nest but can't be sure.  The pictures look a little different, but in the bottom one the head is raised --  on alert.

I am realizing that I've been a bit remiss in posting the news of this nest here (and I've added the cam link and timeline to the first post - thanks for the reminder, Patti!).

This is the first of our Hancock Cam nests to have an egg - I think she laid it around 3:30 am on March 3rd (I looked in and noticed that she was fluffed up and it looked as if she might have been having contractions - but I was late for breakfast and work, so couldn't stay to watch).  Here's a pic that might show her laying an egg:

And around 3:30 that afternoon, after noticing that she was acting as if she might have an egg, we actually got a glimpse of it!  Here's a great video by lovethebabies showing her turning the egg
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ECIku-Hnkj8

And we're 99% certain that she laid her second egg at 11:10 am today.

Here's a pic of her in the process of laying the egg:

And here she is turning the eggs - it may require a bit of imagination, but those of us who saw it live are quite convinced we saw both eggs:

I just stumbled on this cam, alerted by JudyB's most recent post in the forum history. This looks like one I would like to follow ... thanks JudyB

At a few minutes past 6:00 PM, ET ... Mom briefly was calling out ... no response yet to her calls.

The nest is sure close to a busy highway! ... cars, buses constantly passing by. Doesn't seem to bother Mom.

Thank you beans!  I was getting confused!   :mhihi:  I knew one of these nests had laid an egg but you hadn't mentioned it here, which is why I went over to BCAW to look.

So this is Delta 2 ... and Delta 1 is no longer online.

That's correct, Patti - this is a new nest for us to watch this year.

And of course now that I've got everyone excited, the cam seems to be down.  Our tech people are on the job, but it might be morning before they can contact the right people to get things up and running again.

Nice nest, Mom has been  calling out in a quiet way and is ducking her head down as if something is flying over her.  Don't know how she gets any sleep being so close to the highway.  I hope that when the fledglings take their first flight, they go the other way.  Still quietly chirping/calling.

Thanks for the vid Gramps2005.  Something I noticed while watching was when she half got up and was digging in the nest, she seemed to be smacking her lips/beak, she then got out of the bowl and looked like she was feeding one of the chicks, this was before the actual feeding.  I have only seen this type of behaviour at the NCTC nest when Belle was trying to keep Paddy alive with fluids from her beak.  Did anyone else notice this??

One eaglet Oreo fell out of the nest some time last night.   Thanks to cam-viewers who spotted only one eaglet early this morning, HWF called the property owner to check the nest area. He/she found one eaglet on the ground - and it was promptly rescued by Bev and Ralph of OWL (http://www.owlcanada.ca/). They have found no injuries so far, but will keep the eaglet in their facility till ready to fledge. :)

Title: Re: Delta 2 BC Observations, ScreenShots & Video
Post by: JudyB on June 19, 2011, 11:28:35 AM
We had a bit of excitement at the nest this morning.  No one has reported seeing what happened, but the older eaglet Oreo fell from the nest this morning.  It is windy and he has been doing a lot of flapping, so might have been caught by the wind.  Both chicks are also learning to perch on the edge of the nest, so he might have picked a less than stable branch.

Lovethebabies from the Hancock forum contacted Karen Bills as soon as the observers online concluded that Oreo wasn't just branching (he didn't return for a food delivery and they couldn't hear him peeping), and Karen got in touch with the property owner and with Bev and Ralph from O.W.L. (the Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation Society), and I believe the owner found Oreo on the ground and kept watch until Bev and Ralph arrived.

They were able to capture Oreo, and their initial report is that he seems OK - he is able to flap his wings, move his feet, etc.
Bev said he's a bit skinnier than he should be, but has no body mites which is good news.  Bev will do a more complete assessment later today, to make sure nothing is broken.

It's not an area where he could be safely left on the ground, and there's no practical way to return him to the nest (the other eaglet would likely jump out if anyone approached), so Oreo will probably stay at O.W.L. until he's ready to be released.

A big thanks to the early observers from the Hancock forum, the landowner, Karen, and Bev and Ralph from O.W.L. - it's a shame that this happened - but quite wonderful that everything came together for a successful rescue.

The younger eaglet Jet may be a bit lonely - but I think he or she is enjoying first (and only) dibs on the food deliveries.

Added -
Hi BOP - I see we both had the same idea at about the same time to come here and report on this morning's adventures!

Video:  Delta 2 Eaglet Falls from Nest (http://www.youtube.com/user/BeautifulEagles?feature=mhee#p/a/u/0/kRdW4DCC1L4)

During the night or very early morning, one of the eaglets, Oreo, fell from the nest.

Later, a viewer watching the cam noticed an eaglet was missing and made a call to staff at Hancock Wildlife Foundation, who alerted Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation Society. O.W.L. picked him up. He's a little thin but seems to be OK. A thorough exam will follow after the eaglet has some quiet time.

Lunch is delivered to the remaining eaglet, Jet. He immediately mantles his food (to make sure his parent doesn't take it away!) and continues to squeal. The parent may be in the tree. Shortly after this clip, he began to eat his food.

The eaglets have been named Jet and Oreo.

if Oreo chooses to. It could fly to the nest, but as a fully-fledged juvie, could fly anywhere. :)

I don't know what's going on off cam but Jet is squealing up a storm and I keep hearing strange noises off cam.

According to ground observers in the Hancock Forum, that's an air gun that keeps firing!

Video:  Jet Returns to the Nest (http://www.youtube.com/user/BeautifulEagles?feature=mhee#p/a/u/0/aPi6ttsSADQ)

Jet has been making many visits to the nest after fledging on July 16. His sibling, Oreo, fell from the nest on June 19 and was rescued by O.W.L. (Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation Society). Yesterday Oreo was released!

Recorded at 5:30 PM local time

1st egg: 3/3
2nd egg: 3/6
1st hatch: 4/11
2nd hatch: 4/12
1st fledge: 7/16 (Jet)
2nd fledge (released): 7/21 (Oreo)

Here's a 7 minute video of her laying the egg - I included the time stamp at the top of the window, and think it was 5:17 by the time stamp when she actually lays the egg, so about 4 minutes into the video.  I didn't get a good look at the eggs, so am happy to see priscillash's video! :)

 (http://i.ytimg.com/vi/_Py8qEsQtHo/2.jpg?1331083902108) (http://youtu.be/9gBKwq-zlS4)

And a couple of pictures -

My first clear view of the two eggs

And Mom relaxing in the beautiful golden light as the sun sets

It's my understanding that the cam isn't completely set up yet - and I think it's streaming using the equipment from last year's cam (which failed earlier this spring) - and once it's hooked up the way it's meant to be, it may be wide format like our (HWF's) White Rock cams.  Not sure about that, but the eagles look a bit squished at times, which does happen if you don't have the right screen sizes programmed in.

Calendar sorted out I think, Patti - extra copies of the Delta2 second egg removed and spelling fixed, and I added "Delta2 likely 1st egg" on March 3 - their eggs were almost exactly 3 days apart last year, so I'm guessing that will hold true this year.

First hatch at Delta 2 - the chick was seen at 6:15 am, and looked fairly active so probably hatched overnight.

Here's a link to a couple of updates by Bev Day of O.W.L. (http://www.owlcanada.ca/) (the local rehab place) -

http://www.hancockwildlife.org/forum/viewtopic.php?topic=371056#371056 (http://www.hancockwildlife.org/forum/viewtopic.php?topic=371056#371056)

We eventually determined that it is the older eaglet Goldwing who appeared uninterested in feedings on Monday and was standing quite stiffly.  The eaglet was more active and ate some on Tuesday and at one feeding I observed yesterday joined in rushing the parent and was fed first as is often the case here, but left the feeding after a relatively small number of bites.

The eaglets were seven weeks old yesterday, so tend to act as if they're half-starved any time food arrives - but there was a bit less food yesterday than some days, which has led to calls that the eaglets need to be rescued.  There was a lot of food on Tuesday, and there may be a lot of food today - it is a nest where that fluctuates - but trying to keep things calm and making sure accurate information is posted regularly is putting a bit of a strain on us as admins there, as well as on the regular posters on the suddenly very active thread.

Thanks for stopping by last night and sharing your perspective, Patti - people sometimes listen better when it's an "outside expert" who tells them that poop shots suggest that things are working as they should!

As posted by Judy (JKR) this morning.  Fly Free Goldwing!   :crying: :crying:

Quote
Today is one of the saddest days at an eagle nest that any of our Hancock Wildlife family has witnessed on our own nests. Cry Hanky

It seems unfathomable that we could lose Goldwing when she appeared so much better yesterday. Obviously our poor baby was suffering more than we could have imagined. Today she is flying free with the angels --- and I'm sure, being Richard's namesake, that he was there to greet her.

Poor Mom and Linux are standing on the nest looking quite bewildered.

A bit earlier this morning Mom arrived with food. Linux watched her for the longest time but didn't appear to want to leave his place next to Goldwing's body. Eventually hunger won over and he had a bite to eat.

Mom has moved Goldwing's body --- Was she trying to wake her up ? Did she know she was dead ? I do know that these parents loved their chicks and in my heart, and six years of observing, I know that they do have emotions.

It will be very hard for all of us to watch this camera but Linux needs our support and love as well.

Fly free with angels Goldwing. You were loved by all of your Aunties here at Delta2. Red Heart

Love jkr

JudyB ... I feel so badly  :crying: ... it is always hard to lose one ... but I know this nest was special to you ... and to Richard ... that the names for the eaglets came about as a tribute to him. I read some of the posts over on the Hancock board .... one of the posters mentioned that Goldwing flies free and that Richard was there to greet her ... beautiful thought  :nod2:

Poor Linux .... he is presently left alone on the nest with Goldwing's body ... very sad ... can't watch for more than a second ... (http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z199/nightengale14072/GIFS/Heartbreaksmiley-2.gif)

Hi William - and welcome to the forum!

I'm not quite sure what you're asking, so I'll give a bit of general information.  If you're looking for something else, please let us know.

Eagles in British Columbia (and most of the northern part of North America) generally lay their eggs in the spring.  The eggs are incubated by the adults for about 35-40 days, when they hatch.  The chicks generally stay in the nest being fed by the adults for 10-14 weeks.  They are generally full-size a bit before that, but need to work on their muscle development and coordination before they are ready to fledge, or take their first flight.  Once they have begun flying, many eaglets (now called fledglings) will return to the nest to rest, and to be fed by the adults - though the adults will take food to them if they are in the area and call for food, so some eaglets are not seen at the nest after fledging.  After a month or so, the young eagles will leave their parents' territory in search of food - which in BC is found in the northern rivers which generally have runs of salmon at about the time that the newly independent eagles are most in need of easy food.  The salmon swim upstream to spawn, or produce their eggs, then die and wash up on the banks of the river - easy food for eagles and other predators.

The most eagles - likely including the adults at this nest - will also travel north and follow the salmon for a month or so - which is the time that we can approach the nest and repair and replace the cams.  They usually return to the area in late fall, and gradually begin preparing their nest for the next season.

I hope that helps - if you have any other questions, please let us know.

Never a dull moment. Linux is spending the night at the local wildlife rehab centre OWL. He was branching today and apparently thought he was ready to fledge, but landed on the ground and couldn't take off again. OWL has checked him out (he is a bit thin but OK :) ) and may return him to the nest tree tomorrow.

Update on Linux - http://www.hancockwildlife.org/forum/viewtopic.php?showtopic=391753 (http://www.hancockwildlife.org/forum/viewtopic.php?showtopic=391753)

He hasn't eaten since he left the nest, ignoring the food being offered, and showing no interest in the perches in his flight cage.  They're not sure if he's just being stubborn, or if something else is going on.  They've put another juvie in with him, in the hopes that seeing the other eagle using the perches might encourage him to try.

Thanks JudyB for the update. Sure hope he's OK and is just scared. I know that OWL will do what's best for him.  :thumbsup1:
Do you know if the parents have been back to the nest at all since he's been gone?

I think at least one was seen, Lori - haven't had time to read everything on the thread.

this evening's update - things are looking up - Linux is in a 30 foot cage with another juvie and has started to use the perch. :) A local has checked on the parents and they have both been sitting on nearby power poles all day.

Once Linux can show he can fly 60 feet he will be released.

Thanks BOP for the update. So happy to hear that he's perking up and perching now. Does anyone know if they will just release him in the area or will they put him back in his nest?

Title: Re: Delta 2 BC Observations, ScreenShots & Video

My understanding is that they would release him in or by the nest tree but would not actually go into the nest.

Thanks BOP... I hope his parents will continue to feed and care for him if and when he's released. Maybe they should take a pile of fish to put in the area to get them started.  :lollol:

Update from OWL - Linux is on his way home!

They're doing a few last-minute things, but are hoping to release him near the nest tree early this afternoon (it's just after noon in BC now).

I don't think they can return him to the nest (hard to do without the risk of another premature flight), so will probably be releasing him on the ground and watching to make sure he is heading up to the nest.

Update -
Release will be a little later than expected - Bev hasn't been able to reach the homeowners to get access to the area near the tree.  Hopefully soon.

He was released into the tree about 10 minutes ago about 30 feet off the ground.

I don't believe he has shown up in the nest yet.

10:25 pm eastern time - 7:25 pacific time

Linux is back in the tree.  We haven't seen him yet - and I don't know how many of you have watched banding on the Channel Islands, but the eaglets often turn into statues for hours after they are returned to the nest, so I fully expect that Linux is hugging the trunk of the tree and chanting "I'm invisible" in his best silent eagle fashion.

The adults both stopped by the nest late last night - I think after 9 pm (it's light later in BC than in Maine, though they're really not that much farther north) - so I'm hoping that will happen again tonight, and they'll lure him up to the nest.

But I really don't know how strong his wings are, and know flying up takes more strength than flying from perch to perch in a flight pen - so it may be a couple of days.

Please continue to send good thoughts - it's been a rough year here, rather like at the Maine Cam.

Linux is back in his nest!  It took him 24 hours to make his way up to the nest from the branch where he was placed - but Saturday is a busy day in the area (homeowners out and about), and there was a bicycle race on the road by the nest on top of the usual activity, so he probably did his best imitation of a statue much of the day.

He stretched out in the nest for a nap after his arrival.  Then was up in an hour or so, and back up to the upper branches, perching and looking around.  So happily not spooked by whatever happened Tuesday that ended up with him on the ground.

Thread about his stay at OWL, with pictures there and of his being put in the tree - http://www.hancockwildlife.org/forum/viewtopic.php?showtopic=391753

Posts about his arrival in the nest start here - http://www.hancockwildlife.org/forum/viewtopic.php?topic=393685#393685

jkr's s'cap of him up in the branches

He's been up to the branches and back down to the nest a couple of times - and we do hope he plans to spend the night in the nest tree - though he is 12-1/2 weeks old, and probably has discovered that he really does know how to fly.

Thank you so much and thanks for the incredible news that Linux is being fed and cared for. I tried to watch the cam and could not get it to stream at all.

Title: Re: Delta 2 BC Observations, ScreenShots & Video
Post by: JudyB on July 08, 2012, 02:14:47 PM
Thanks, Lori  :blush2:

We've discovered that some of the recent updates to Adobe Flash tend to make our cams freeze, either with a black screen right after the opening ad, or with a view of the cam right after the opening ad.

If that happens, most people are able to get them to continue streaming by either clicking the words "Live Stream" in the upper right corner of the viewing window, or by clicking the orange "stop" button in the lower left, and then the orange "play" triangle that appears after you click the stop button - or occasionally by doing both things.

Linux has been staying close to home so far today, spending much of his time perched in the upper branches of the nest tree, but also occasionally coming down to the nest to lie down for a little while.

Hi everyone!  Linux stayed around the nest tree for a few more days, then left again on July 11, exactly three months after he hatched.  We haven't seen him back in the nest since then, though the adults are still in the area, and there have been a couple of sightings of a juvie nearby - so we are hoping he's happily exploring though we would like him to stop by for a visit.

For those who are interested, Hancock Wildlife is in the middle of its annual fundraising drive.  We have some great plans for upgrading the cams at our three primary nests (Delta 2, Lafarge and White Rock), and David would like to add cams at a new nest up near Harrison/Chehalis area where we had the cams in the fall watching the eagles during the salmon runs.  As part of the push for funds, some long-time supporters have offered to match up to $1500 in donations made today and tomorrow.  Here's a link where you can read more about our plans - and make a donation if you wish - http://www.hancockwildlife.org/article.php/2012FundDrive-03 (http://www.hancockwildlife.org/article.php/2012FundDrive-03).  Thank you.

We think the first egg may have been laid the afternoon/evening of March 7, though the pair did seem to be doing less incubating than most parents of a new egg - but last year the cam was down when the first egg was laid, so we don't know what is normal for them.  And both eggs hatched the same day last year - which does suggest that the first wasn't incubated a lot until the second one joined it.

Anyway, if she really did lay the first one on the 7th, the second one might arrive today.  And happily Ken was able to get out and do the needed work on the cam hookup so the "zoomers" can again let us see the eagles up close and personal!

I deleted the March 9 date - I think all of us were a bit uncertain when the first egg was laid until this afternoon.  Thanks for adding the March 7 date for the first egg - and the second was indeed laid this afternoon.

Here's a video of Mom Delta laying the egg - the time is a bit off in the video, but it was at almost 4 minutes into the video, and the real time was 3:34 pm

Today is day 36 for the first egg, and I think they did start incubating fairly soon after the first one was laid, so it may well hatch today.

Oops - thanks, Shoebutton!  I forgot to post here.  :blush2:

It looked as if the hatch was complete at 9:43 pm yesterday, May 5, pacific time - not sure if that it official time, but I'm going with it for now.

And there's a definite flap with beak pushing against it in the second egg, so hatch is underway.  There's also a dark spot, which might be a pip and also might be dirt - but no one can dispute the crack!

I accessed the WildEarthTV archives of the Delta Bald Eagle Nest and found this excellent close-up of one of the Delta 2 Eagles.  One can get a good look at the tongue and the glottis.

“The tongue of a bird is extremely sensitive, filled with tactile sensory corpuscles. Two features we could see were the hole in the tongue and the backward facing barbs. The hole in the tongue is the “glottis” which is the entrance to the larynx and trachea which is known as the windpipe. The glottis closes during swallowing. The barbs are called “rear-directed papillae” and aid in the swallowing of food.”

I took this pic on the 15th but could still barely see one of the chicks on the side of Mom.

Mom dug something strange out of the nest and dropped it over the side I think.  A bone of some sort perhaps...?

As was discussed in a couple of posts that were moved, the new egg was at Delta 3 (though I think the Delta 2 pair is getting close - and there's more activity at Harrison Mills than is usual so early in the season - so who knows!).

We now have a new thread for Delta 3 - http://www.window-on-wildlife.com/index.php?topic=322.0

And we are wishing for the best at all the HWF nests - and at all the nests!

A beautiful sub-adult (4 1/2 - 5 year old, per a 'pro!) eagle visited the nest area twice (!) today.  The resident eagles were not at the nest - but may have been nearby - regardless, the eagle was not chased away.  Here's a video of the second visit:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YJL015h2Mvo
More details about this great (man-made!) nest can be found on the Hancock forum:  http://www.hancockwildlife.org/forum/index.php?forum=65

It appears that C2, the youngest chick on Delta 2, named Pippin, is ill.  S/he may have symptoms of the respiratory illness, aspergillosis.
Sending positive thoughts to Delta 2... :sosad:

The two chicks are "twins" who hatched about 14 hours apart; they were 6 weeks old on Monday.

Here's a picture from earlier today, courtesy of Maggie1 - older eaglet Ace is lying down, Pippen is standing.

I'm afraid I'm seeing some similarities to 2012, when the older eaglet died at about 7 weeks old; we thought s/he might have gotten a bone caught in the crop - or maybe ate something unhealthy, but weren't able to examine the body so never really knew what happened.

Pippen did eat a little bit last night, but it appears that s/he hasn't been very interested in eating for at least 3-4 days, maybe more.  There's plenty of food and rivalry hasn't been an issue.  Keeping fingers crossed, but it's not looking good.

There's one chick at our Harrison Mills nest, 3-1/2 week old Sandy; there were two there initially, but younger chick Piper failed to thrive and died within a few days of hatching.

We think the White Rock pair has at least one chick, but they moved to a new tree this year and we can just see the tops of heads and movements with the cams in the old tree; we're hoping local observers will see more once the chick(s) are bigger.

And the Lafarge nest failed - we're pretty sure the eggs didn't hatch; there was a new female this year, and lots of things might have gone wrong - and they also nested out of sight of our camera at the Lafarge facility, though both adults are now spending time there perched on the Artificial Nest on site, and are using that nest for feeding - and we are hoping they'll try nesting there next year.

Little Pippen is still hanging in there at Delta 2 - but still hasn't eaten, so its not looking promising.  :crying:
