Title: Smith Mtn Lake, VA Osprey Cam 2012 season
Post by: Walpolema on April 08, 2012, 06:32:15 PM
An egg has been laid today at the Smith Mountain Lake State Park Osprey Cam in Virginia.
It looks like a spectacular cam! No sound that I can hear, and no night cam, but clear strong picture during daylight. I'll post any more info I can find as to the nest history.

As yet unnamed Mom & Dad... :innocent:

Although situated on the second largest body of freshwater in the state, Smith Mountain Lake State Park is not just for water enthusiasts. In addition to a full range of water related activities, including swimming, fishing and boating, the park offers miles of hiking trails, housekeeping cabins, primitive camping, picnicking, a visitor center and interpretive programs.Smith Mountain Lake itself was created in 1960 when Appalachian Power built a dam on the Roanoke River in Smith Mountain Gap. Construction of the dam was completed in 1966, and in 1967 Appalachian Power donated the first parcel of park's land for the proposed park. The state bought the rest of the park's land over the next six years. The park opened to the public in 1983.

The fish is being taken away, after a tussle over it.  One of the eggs looks like things are imminent.
Hmmmm....the site is running a prerecording right now...so I don't know when this actually happened.
Chatters say the cam is down today....ggrrrrrrr :rant2:

Yep, they are both there!

The 'regulars' on the SS on UStream apparently have just decided to call them Smith and Virginia.   Cute!  :nod2:

1st egg here yesterday 4/4
.....might be a situation developing though as apparently the female has some sort of netting wrapped around
her right foot or talons. :pray2

Very sad news here today..........apparently a Great Horned owl got all of the osprey chicks, the last one being
last night.  :sosad:
I haven't followed the nest this year at all so I'm not sure of all the details.
I believe they had four eggs and think that at least three hatched.  The first one was May 10th so they
were a few weeks old.

Mom was here with a fish and I understand she came in and out a couple times with it looking for her babies.

Well, at least one of the pair is back.  Folks on SS mentioned seeing female but I'm not sure whether this
is her.

I pray for a better outcome for this nest this year.  :pray2

The one on the right came in and the other followed immediately.  They appear to be a pair and they
appear to be on alert.
Someone on the chat that is local said they saw 4 osprey circling yesterday just out of sight to the left of the cam.

Well, maybe they weren't a pair! chatters indicate that this one wound up pushing the other off the nest!
I got busy after posting the above but I didn't notice any aggression or submissiveness between the two
at all.  Guess I should have kept watching!  :lollol:
A couple of the chatters seem to be familiar with the pair and indicate they believe this is the resident
female, 'Ginny'.

According to SS, they have egg(s) here but I haven't found out when or how many.
....and the osprey aren't cooperating for me to have a look so far.

This looks like a lovely location - but I think not a cam I'm going to watch.  I checked the cam page with the idea of adding it to my spreadsheet, and learned that there were two chicks, but one was taken by a predator (maybe owl?) and the other found on the ground beside the nest; that chick was returned to the nest initially, and it's not clear if it died there or if it died while being taken to rehab - but either way, they again lost their chicks.  :crying:
